"What a wonderful story. Beautifully written by a clear wordsmith" Charlotte Duncan
"Suspense, intrigue, descriptions and emotion all makes a fantastic read, I couldn't put it down" Edinburgh

'What is it Peter?' she said, after a while.
'I can never get used to this, Alexi. Having you, that is. How did I deserve you?'
'Deserve me? You don't have to do anything to deserve me. I love you. It's as simple as that. I love you for what you are. All you need to do is love me back. You don't earn love, as a payment in return.'
Peter Kingsmill's life had run into the sands since the death of his wife. What was a glittering London career had lost its shine. Until, that is, his life is turned upside down by an unexpected collision of events. He inherits the family estate, meets a girl seventeen years his junior and receives an anonymous letter which casts doubt on all the certainties on which he has built his past life.
What follows is a journey of discovery which takes him back in time to war-torn Europe. To a story of betrayal in the secret world of spies and double agents, and ultimately to redemption and a bright new life.
The narrative moves at speed from the dusty plains of pre-war Poland to the frozen winter landscapes of German-occupied Norway and finally to the gentle pastoral of the north Yorkshire hills. It is a story of a search for the pieces that make up a human life; and of the love that binds those pieces together.
'...Do you remember the Snow Queen story? I can complete the pattern now. I have everything I need.'

I thoroughly enjoyed this novel. The text reveals the author has an excellent “English” education and thus it is artfully written and pleasure to read.Set principally in England (London, Yorkshire, Oxford) and Oslo the writing style is rich with descriptions of the locale, all of which by my experience is accurate in detail.
The “story” is cleverly done but the reader is possibly confused whether it is a romance novel or a spy story. Early on, one is inclined to put it down as a casual romance to be enjoyed at the beach on a lazy afternoon. Then we encounter twists and turns and are introduced to the intrigue of the WWII British SOE and the hazards of wartime espionage. This section is somewhat short of what we would call “spy craft”, but then I suspect this is deliberate as the author is not at all attempting to replicate le Carre or Furst.
Do not give up on this worthwhile book. In the end we are treated to a thoughtful work about human nature and human emotions.

LEAVING PIMLICO edition by PB North Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
I was impressed. The writing was quite good, the plot was excellent – you could not see around the bend in this plot. The context of the story was cultured and for an espionage novel it was very satisfying. Congratulations Mr. North. There were a few minor proof reading errors. My only other concern was that Alexi writes on a typewriter, then a keyboard, and seems able to do a lot of research from her small cottage in the country in multiple snowstorms - pre-computer era, pre-internet, in 1989...?
This is a pleasantly engaging story about a successful British civil servant who gets off the political merry-go-around and searches for truth and meaning as he unearths his family's secret history. It's a sensitive story of discovery, told with affection and care. The main characters is easy to like and the author's portrayal of him is intimate and credible. There is some mystery and suspense but it develops naturally. While this is no page-turner, it's nonetheless thoroughly enjoyable
Although I really wanted to find out how this story ends, I found that wading through miles of boring detail was just too much to deal with. I finally gave up about 2/3 of the way through. I sure wish a good editor had gotten his hands on it. If it had been 100 pages shorter, it probably would be good
The basic story of wartime espionage, betrayal and its consequences on a human level is a good one and well told. Unfortunately the secondary storyline of a middle aged " ministry functionary" adrift and finding new love with a young free lance writer and her perfect family in a perfect village in yorkshire inhabited by heart of gold locals is just too trite to be plausible and its "disney" like qualities really detract from the main plot line. I would liked to have been more generous in my rating but my irritation with the secondary story really affected my ability to keep going to find out the mystery behind the main story. I managed to finish the book but feel it could have been so much better than it is !
The story was initially hard to get into. Have faith! It becomes the hugely rewarding and intricately plotted adventure of a British Civil Servant whose life changes completely after a few chance encounters including a beautiful young woman he quickly falls in love with and a packet of mysterious photos which eventually leads to profound and heart felt revelations about his life and parents. The fact that the flashbacks occur in Europe during WWII, adds greatly to the intrigue and I really appreciated how you could not be certain which characters were ultimately heroes or betrayers until the end.
This is the first book I have read by Mr. North and reads like an elderly novel. That is no bad thing- it is interesting throughout, the bad guy is bad and the woman becomes his wife and behaves as he would wish. Many of the people he writes about and defined by their era and their age, but are quite recognisable by this 72 year old. Younger readers may find it all a bit "old" so the overall score may reflect this ultimately.
As one who has never voted Conservative I am happy to concede that the very Establishment view of the behaviour of the various characters was hearteningly correct. Some may be bored by the gentle pace but -be fair-the author is telling the reader about his world-a fair step away from that of most, probably. You paid a modest price for a proper book, and got good reading for your modest pennies. It is interesting to learn how those who rule our lives really live,
One of the very best books I have read in the past couple of years. Let me say first that I read and love historical fiction based on the WWII period. "Leaving Pimlico" is among the finest of this type that you are likely to come across.
This is a thriller and a love story unmatched in my opinion. The research is first rate and weaving of the story lines is just exceptional.
This novel will warm your heart-no other way to say it. To realize that this is Mr. North's first novel makes his achievement even more notable.
As I don't wish to sound overly enthusiastic I will offer one small suggestion. Reduce the descriptions of the surroundings and the countryside by about 20%.
I am eagerly awaiting Mr. North's next novel which is promised later in the year.
P.S. This is a long book at a great price !!!
